AWM Mammography Policy
November 18, 2009
AWM continues to recommend annual digital mammography starting at age 40 as also recommended by the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the American Cancer Society, the American College of Breast Surgeons, and the American College of Radiology.
Studies cited by the United States Preventive Services Task Force (which advocates starting mammography at age 50) still show up to a 15% reduction in deaths if women initiate regular mammography at age 40. It is likely that digital mammography would have produced even greater improvement.
AWM is concerned about the worry created by false positives (abnormalities and biopsies which are normal). We will continuously strive to help you make the right decisions.
Please contact any AWM office if you have questions.
Respectfully,
AWM Physicians
